Jay Hurd will discuss baseball, America’s “National Pastime,” not only as a game but also as a representation of social mores. This presentation will examine a history of African Americans in baseball – noting impact on American culture - from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.
Jay Hurd is a librarian and museum educator. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), is a contributor to the SABR Baseball Biography Project, and presents on baseball related topics including the Negro Leagues, baseball literature for children and young adults, women in baseball, and baseball and the Blue Laws. A current research focus is baseball in Bristol, and Rhode Island.
Jay, a longtime fan of the Boston Red Sox, relocated from Medford, MA to Bristol, RI in 2016.
