At 14 years old, Madison Castigliego can remove Fenway Park from her list of fields of dreams now that she’s had the opportunity to play at the famed home of the Boston Red Sox.

Madison, who represented Bristol and Rhode Island in the 2014 Pitch, Hit and Run competition, an event sponsored by Major League Baseball, won both the Bristol event and the sectional event held at Pawtucket’s McCoy Stadium.

“I did it last year so when I got to McCoy (this year) my whole thing was that I wanted to make it to Fenway,” Madison said.

The skills competition tests participants who attempt to pitch six balls at a target, run from short stop (an infield position between second and third base) to home plate, and hit a ball from a tee in a straight line for distance. Then the judges calculate the results for an overall score.

Madison excelled at all three. Before heading to Fenway, she won the statewide sectional competition held at McCoy Stadium, where she competed against 15 girls from across Rhode Island. In Boston, the field was narrowed to just three girls, each of whom won their state.

“You do all the (events) on the field, but there are certain spots you couldn’t go,” she said of her time on the field at Fenway.

“I would have wanted to go on to Nationals,” Madison said of her performance, which fell just short.

But she did get to throw out the first pitch at a Pawtucket Red Sox game, and continues her promising softball career. After pitching for her team at Kickemuit Middle School, playing with a team at the East Bay Fastpitch league and planning to play for Bay View Academy where she will attend next year, her time on the diamond is far from over.

“When you find out you’re not just good in Bristol, it’s kind of cool,” she said.
