To the editor:
The Island Park 2019 Polar Dive, organized by John Vitkevich and the Portsmouth Business Association (PBA) on New Year’s Day, was a true community event involving several hundred local participants and supporters. This year’s beneficiary of the Polar Dive donations and raffle sales was the Portsmouth Historical Society, which netted over $1,800.
We want to thank John “Vit,” the PBA and the Polar Dive participants for their support of our Society and our mission of preserving, protecting and promoting Portsmouth’s unique history. The funds generated by the Polar Dive will be used to further that mission and expand the public events hosted by the Society to showcase our history.
This year’s events will include several lectures, history book club sessions, Portsmouth history trivia contests, public displays of the original 1638 Portsmouth Compact and our town’s copy of the original Declaration of Independence.
There will also be commemorations of key historic events and occasions to include Anne Hutchinson’s birthday, the capture of British Gen. Richard Prescott in Portsmouth by Rhode Island militia Col. William Barton in 1777, and the Battle of Rhode Island, which culminated in Portsmouth in 1778. We also plan to host historic plays performed by the Portsmouth Community Theater and a Navy Band concert in our upstairs meeting room.
The Society will open to the public for the season from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 26, the day before Memorial Day, and will feature new exhibits created by our Curator Committee. Details can be found on our website at www.portsmouthhistorical.org.
