Serving the community of Little Compton has been an incredible privilege and an opportunity I do not take for granted. For five years I have served on the School Committee, the last four as chairman where we made incredible strides. Standing on the shoulders of those who served before us, we continued the practice of submitting responsible budgets that served both the outcomes of our students and the broader community. We implemented the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program ensuring our children grow into lifelong learners, engaged neighbors, and impactful community leaders. We saw steady growth in RICAS scores that regularly place our students among the state’s best, earned four consecutive 5-Star designations from the Rhode Island Department of Education, and most recently received the distinction of the #1 elementary school in Rhode Island from U.S. News & World Report. We also secured a $500,000 PFAS grant to protect our municipal water and worked with the Town Council, after strong community support at Financial Town Meeting, to install a solar array that significantly offsets electricity costs at our largest municipal building. Throughout, we kept policies in place that protect student safety, support growth and academic outcomes, while staying compliant with federal and state law. Our school and the educators who serve our community are something every one of us can be proud of.
I’m running for Town Council because I want to bring that same collaborative approach to the opportunities facing Little Compton in the years and decades ahead. My priorities are clear.
First, continued financial recovery, better reporting, transparency, and accountability so we don’t repeat the missteps of the past.
Second, housing opportunities for people at every age and stage of life, working with the Housing Trust, the Commons Foundation, and the Little Compton Agricultural Trust in seeking meaningful solutions.
Third, the continued professionalization of municipal positions and services so daily operations remain strong and efficient; that starts with approving the Charter questions the Town Council has already placed on the ballot.
Fourth, supporting our farmers by leaning into the Right to Farm Act and finding practical ways they can thrive under those guidelines.
Finally, embracing the future with an abundance mindset—empowering small businesses, farms, municipal operations, and community stakeholders with the tools they need to succeed.
It has been an honor to serve on the School Committee and to see what steady, collaborative work can accomplish. With your support, I hope to continue that momentum on the Town Council alongside my running mates and endorsed democratic slate of Andrew Iriarte-Moore, Victoria Talbot, and Patrick McHugh. When working to make Little Compton the best version of itself, the majority matters.
I respectfully ask for your vote on November 3, and look forward to continuing the conversation on how we create a Little Compton that best serves us all.
Travis Auty
Democratic candidate for Little Compton Town Council.
