Incumbents voted off Barrington's Committee on Appropriations

Newcomers Susie Holloway and Steven DeLuca earn spots on the COA

Voters at Barrington’s financial town meeting voted in two new Committee on Appropriations members early Thursday morning, June 17.

While most of the meeting was held on Wednesday night, taxpayers did not officially vote on COA membership until early Thursday morning. And when they did so, they opted to place some new individuals on the committee.

Steven DeLuca and Susie Holloway earned more votes than incumbent COA members John Alessandro and Dr. Lisa Daft.

“I was very disappointed, of course,” said Dr. Daft. “I think I did a good job representing our town’s taxpayers and wish I could have contributed again. But, the voters spoke and I accept their decision. I wish the new members of the COA good luck.”

John Alessandro questioned whether the COA vote should have been held so late in the night. He said many other town boards and commissions choose not to meet past 11 p.m.

“We should never vote after midnight,” Mr. Alessandro said, adding that many of his supporters left the meeting after an earlier vote to purchase the Carmelite Monastery property passed, 176-175.

Cynthia Rosengard, an incumbent, retained her spot on the committee.

Mr. DeLuca, Ms. Holloway and Ms. Rosengard will join current Appropriations members Stephen Primiano and Bill DeWitt.

During their brief statements at the FTM, Mr. DeLuca and Ms. Holloway offered some information about why they believed they would be good selections for the COA. Mr. DeLuca said he has to manage and balance his company’s budget. He also said he had previously served on the Barrington Park and Recreation Commission and had been a member of the town’s Energy and Resilience Committee. Ms. Holloway said she served on a water and sewer authority while living in North Carolina.
