Girls hoops star Pichette named MAC MVP

Posted

Westport girls basketball senior forward Lily Pichette was named the Mayflower Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player. Pichette has been a prolific scorer and rebounder for Westport this season. The tall, athletic Pichette scored 257 points, pulled down 199 rebounds and made 61 steals.

Lily is dynamite player,” said Westport head coach Jen Gargiulo, “She’s very versatile, agile and quick. She’s a threat offensively, rebounds, blocks shots and makes those steals defensively. She’s outstanding.”

Pichette plays the low post for Westport, but can also play high post and run the floor when needed. The multi-talented senior has a plethora of moves to the basket, can shoot mid and long range jumpers and drive to the hoop like a gazelle.

“Lily has a nice mid-range jumper, a post player that has the moves that she has with her back to the basket, doesn’t necessarily have that. Because she has both, it’s makes her that much more of a scoring threat,” said Coach Gargiulo.

Pichette is also a tough defensive player and a beast on the boards. Her length and quickness serves her well as a defender where she can play up on the press and makes steals as well as rebound and block shots under the hoop.

Pichette the team's captain, credits her dad, Steve, a former Westport High School basketball player, for helping her become a complete player.

“My dad and all of my siblings play basketball,” said Pichette. “My dad has helped me a lot with developing my skills and how I play. We play one on one and work on post moves. We work on stop and pops, outside shots and foul shots. We kind of just work on everything,” she said.

Pichette began her junior-senior high school career playing junior varsity in seventh and eighth grade. Coach Michael Ponte added her to the varsity team her freshman year in 2019. Soon after she was starting and quickly became a go to low post scorer for the Wildcats.

“I think that I am starting to develop into who I am as a player,” Pichette said. “Hopefully everything just kind of falls into place.”

The Wildcat isn’t sure where she’ll end up in college next season. But one thing is for sure, the school that gets her will have a terrific player.
