Join on Sunday, June 14 for an open house and Revolutionary War demonstration. From 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Thirteenth Continental Regiment will be presenting a Revolutionary War encampment and demonstrations at Hunt’s Mills.
The Thirteenth Continental Regiment, based in Rehoboth, Mass., puts on demonstrations that recreate the lifestyles, clothing, equipment, drill, battle scenarios, and encampment of the men, women, and children of the original 1774 company. Their goal is to provide an educational resource to the public and to further the understanding of the early portion of the American War for Independence.
The encampment will be located at the front of the Hunt’s Mills property with demonstrations of 18 century crafts and skills. Timothy Walker’s 22 Massachusetts Regiment will be drilling and firing 18th century muskets at various times throughout the day.
Also, the John Hunt Museum and Education Center will be open from 1-3:30 p.m. for tours and exhibit viewing. The EP250 exhibit will be on view for the rest of the year. Be sure to join us.
A hike will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon). Meet at the gazebo on the site. From 1-3:00 p.m. there will also be ancestry research assistance going on at the Educational Center.
The museum committee, chaired by Nancy Allen, has collected an amazing array of items, including a Windsor chair and a trunk that belonged to Revolutionary War soldiers. Also in this collection are numerous household items, such as a bed warmer, a foot warmer (for those cold New England winters), candle mold, pewter plates and a Betty lamp.
There also are reproductions of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, Bill of Rights and the flag adopted by Congress in 1777 that has the familiar 13 red and white stripes and 13 white stars on a blue field. We have recently learned that John Hunt was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, which makes this display even more meaningful.
