EAST PROVIDENCE — An East Providence firefighter was recently arrested at his home in city on multiple charges related to weapons and domestic disturbance.

Captain Michael J. Rapoza, the East Providence Police Department's Services Division Commander/Public Information Officer, confirmed reports Ricky Tiburcio, 35, an East Providence resident, was arrested on Sunday, Oct. 15 and charged with the following:

  • Carrying a weapon while intoxicated
  • Possession of a large capacity feeding device/magazine
  • Domestic refuse/relinquish a telephone
  • Domestic vandalism
  • Obstructing an officer in execution of duty

In a statement issued Monday morning, Oct. 23, Rapoza wrote EPPD officers were dispatched to his residence based upon a call for service reporting a disturbance which led to the charges. After his arrest Tiburcio was arraigned at the hospital. He was later released on a $5,000 bond and issued a no-contact order.

Rapoza noted Tiburcio has yet to be formally processed, so no mug shot was taken. A formal report had also of yet been completed because one of the responding officers was injured during the incident and his statement has not been finished.

Tiburcio is scheduled to be formally arraigned in District Court on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 9 a.m.

Tiburcio's employer, the City of East Providence/East Providence Fire Department, also issued a statement through the mayor's office once his arrest was first made public late last week.

The following comments were credited to EPFD Chief Glenn Quick:

"The East Providence Fire Department is aware of the recent arrest of Firefighter Ricky Tiburcio on domestic charges and other charges. We take these allegations seriously and are committed to ensuring a thorough and impartial, internal investigation.

"The East Providence Fire Department is dedicated to the safety and well-being of our community, and we will not tolerate any behavior that goes against our core values. We understand the concerns that may arise from such incidents and assure the public that we will act in a transparent and responsible manner as we gather more information. The alleged actions of one individual do not represent the dedication and professionalism of our entire firefighting team.

"While the investigation is ongoing, we would like to emphasize that the matter is now in the judicial system, and we will cooperate fully with the legal process. We remain committed to our mission of protecting and serving our community."
