Barrington boys in the hunt for playoff spot

The Barrington High School boy’s hockey team went 1-1-1 in three league games last week, as they tied Mount St. Charles 2-2 on Thursday evening, lost to East Greenwich 5-0 on Saturday evening, and ended the weekend with a 3-2 victory over the Moses Brown Quakers on Sunday afternoon. Sunday’s Senior Day victory against the Quakers improved the Eagle’s record to 4-8-1 in league play and kept them in contention for a playoff spot.

Thursday night’s game against Mount Saint Charles started strong for the Eagles, as senior captain Sam Faulkner and junior Cole Vieira each notched goals and junior Tucker Squires and sophomore Ben Lebreche contributed assists towards a 2-0 lead. The Mounties fought back with two late goals to earn the tie in the final minutes of the game.

Sunday’s Senior Day contest against the Quakers honored four Barrington seniors: Cameron Watts, Josh Leblanc, Brenen Gazeryan and Sam Faulkner. It was a back and forth game; the Eagles took an early lead with a first period goal from Gazeryan assisted by freshman Chase Watts and Faulkner, but the Quakers responded soon after to tie it up at 1-1 at the end of the first period. In the second period the Eagles again took the lead, this time from sophomore Trevor Snow assisted by freshman Henry Kelsey. A third goal from Leblanc in the third period widened the Eagle’s lead to 3-1, but the Quakers continued to battle, adding a second goal to bring the score to 3-2. Cam Siwik notched an impressive 27 saves, and notably contributed a key breakaway save late in the game to keep the Eagles in the lead.

The Eagles play their two final league matches this week, which will be for playoff standings. The first game is on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at home (Portsmouth Abbey Rink) against the Burrillville Broncos (4-4-2) and then on Saturday, Feb. 19 against the Quakers (4-8-1) at 7 p.m. at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket.
