As a grandfather with young grandkids, maybe I’m a bit idealistic, but it would seem to me any opportunity to support your child’s pursuit of some FREE MONEY like this is time well spent.

Column: Parents of teens, here’s something to be excited about

Posted

I am thrilled to see the initial response the Bristol Municipal Career and Technical Academy (BMCTA) is having to its announcement of the Career Explorer Summertime Mini-Grants. With a total budget of $15,000 ready to be split among 20-30 inquisitive Bristol and Warren teenagers, parents should be all over this.

I must admit though, I am surprised how few parents have been emailing me for information (cevans@rogersfreelibrary.org). The Rogers Free Library has set up a very user-friendly online application for the grant.

For parents of young teenagers, sitting side-by-side with your child filling out this application should be a wonderful experience. As a grandfather with young grandkids, maybe I’m a bit idealistic, but it would seem to me any opportunity to support your child’s pursuit of some FREE MONEY like this is time well spent.

To further the support of parents encouraging their kids, I am holding three Mini-Grant Discussion Groups for Parents during the next few weeks. This is how you will learn everything you’ve ever wanted to know about Mini-Grants, but were afraid to ask!

These sessions will be held at the Rogers Free Library on the following dates and times: Saturday, April 27 at 10 a.m.; Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m; and Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m.

Please pay attention to this, parents. Very little is being asked of your kids. By filling out a grant application (a real-world learning experience in and of itself) they could qualify for up to $750 to cover the cost of a pet project or some serious career exploration.

I know, in the end it’s up to your kids, but your encouragement can go a long way.
