Good Samaritans try to extinguish the outboard engine fire

Posted

Emergency personnel from a number of communities responded to the water off Latham Park on Sunday night, July 26, after a boat’s motor caught fire.

Barrington Police Chief Michael Correia said boats from Barrington, Portsmouth, Warren, Warwick, and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management responded to the incident. He also praised the efforts of some Good Samaritans who were near the boat in distress. Chief Correia said the Good Samaritans used their own boat motor to try to extinguish the fire — they titled up the outboard and sprayed water on the burning engine. The Good Samaritans also took the people aboard from the disabled vessel.

Chief Correia said DEM took the lead in the response effort. He said no one was injured. The boat’s operator had made arrangements to have the boat towed back into port. It was not clear why the boat’s motor caught fire.
