Boys basketball
Barrington High School senior Ethan Coutu exploded for 22 points and led his team to a 46-40 win over North Kingstown on Friday, Dec. 17.
Coutu went 9-for-10 from the free throw line and also knocked down a three-pointer in the victory. Matt Raffa added nine points for the Eagles, who evened their league record to 1-1.
Other Eagles to break into the scoring column included Sean Bonneau, Nick Scandura, Andrew Madden and Jack Abadi.
Barrington lost its season-opener to Westerly on Dec. 14, 47-35. Dan Coogan paced Barrington with 10 points, while Bonneau and Coutu each finished with seven.
The Eagles were scheduled to play at Times2 Academy on Tuesday night.
Boys swimming
The Barrington High School boys swim team knocked off Bishop Hendricken 55-39 in the season-opening meet last week.
Coach Sandy Gorham said his team performed well, and he was happy to score the victory over the perennial boys state champs.
Coach Gorham said Hendricken’s team depth makes them very hard to beat in the regular season, and even harder to top at the state championship meet.
“It’s a good starting point,” Coach Gorham said. “But I told them (his team) that we’ve got bigger fish to fry at the end of the season.”
The Eagles had a number of strong performances in the season-opening dual. Coach Gorham mentioned Will McClelland, Max LaRoche, Lucas Jauregui, Keith Hartman, Jared Lesk, Gavin Nelson, Graham Bennett, Alex McClelland and Ben McClelland.
Coach Gorham said members of the BHS girls swim team turned out to support the boys team — while the girls were not allowed on the pool deck because of Covid-19 restrictions, the BHS girls stood outside the pool, slapping on the windows and waving signs.
The BHS girls do not begin their season until Jan. 4.
Boys hockey
Barrington played three games this week and came away with two ties and a loss. Wednesday’s non league game against Falmouth had an exciting finish despite a slow start for the Eagles. Late in the game, the Eagles trailed 3-1 with the lone goal scored by senior Sam Faulkner and assisted by senior Brenan Gazeryan and freshman Cody Wood. The Eagles came back with two goals in the final minute to earn a 3-3 tie. Faulkner scored both of the late goals, one assisted by freshman Drake Almeida and the other by Gazeryan, to notch the hat trick.
The Eagles then took on the Mansfield Hornets on Saturday evening, again ending with a tie. This time the Eagles started strong, with an early goal by freshman Chase Watts, assisted by Faulkner and sophomore Trevor Snow, and a second period goal scored by Gazeryan and assisted by Wood. But Mansfield came back strong in the third period with two goals, and the game ended at 2-2.
On Sunday, the Eagles fell to the Cumberland Clippers 2-0. The physical match offered the Eagles multiple power play opportunities, but the Eagles remained scoreless for the game. Goaltender Cam Siwik was busy through the week facing 28, 32 and 19 shots across the three games.
The team has another busy upcoming week with two critical league matches, first against top seeded Hendricken (2-0) on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. and then again on Thursday night at 6 against East Greenwich (1-1). Both are home games for the Eagles, at the Portsmouth Abbey rink. Masks are required.
Boys indoor track
The Barrington High School boys indoor track team defeated Moses Brown 80-25 and Central 91-22 in its dual meet opener last week.
Barrington picked up key points across the board. The Eagles swept the 3,000, 55 hurdles, 600 and 4x400-meter relay.
“We have a large team again this season, with over 70 athletes on the boys roster,” said BHS Coach Bill Barrass. “It is also a strong team. We have nationally-ranked Asher Robbins and Liam Capozza in the weight throw. Andrew Blazewicz, Nate Greenberg, and Jackson O'Connor are our top sprinters. Ethan Knight and Eli Terrell are our top hurdlers. Holden Vaughan, Brandon Piedade, and Andrew Rego are top distance runners.
“We also have dozens of talented freshmen and sophomores who are going to begin to challenge for some of our varsity spots.”
Coach Barrass said this year’s team captains are Robbins and Capozza for the throws, Rego and Caleb Schultz for the distance runners, and O'Connor and Blazewicz for the sprinter-jumper group.
“I think we have a shot at repeating as Class B champions, although it is already easy to tell that we will be challenged by teams from West Warwick, Classical, Portsmouth, and maybe one or two others,” he said.
Barrington also competed in the recent RITCA Invitational. Robbins and Capozza finished first and second, respectively, in the weight throw, while the 4x200-meter relay team of Greenberg, O’Connor, Blazewicz and Iain DeBoth finished third. Blazewicz, Rego, Charlie Stockwell and DeBoth ran to a sixth-place finish in the 4x400.
