The Red Sox had a tough day, but otherwise opening day of Warren Little League's summer season went off without a hitch Saturday when hundreds of parents, town officials and summer sports lovers crowded Jannitto Field to dedicate a new field house and get the summer off to a good start.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no traditional parade down Main Street prior to opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. Instead, a smaller, socially-distant players' procession headed down to the field from the St. Mary of the Bay parking lot.
Jannitto Field was in its Sunday best for the occasion, and league members honored Angie Dolan and Donald Gale by dedicating the field's renovated and expanded field house in their honor. Over the past year, the old single story concession stand was almost completely rebuilt, with the addition of a second floor complete with a scorer's press box and indoor bathroom. The building was christened the Dolan Gale Memorial Field House.
After the ceremony was over, the Majors division Yankees and Red Sox squared off for the first official game of the season. Shield your eyes, Sox fans: The Yankees won 9-0, despite hard play on both sides.
