Barrington's Kelly is national hammer champ

Posted

It was a clean sweep for Barrington's Adam Kelly this year.

The recent Barrington High School graduate won the boys' hammer event at the New Balance National Scholastic Track and Field Championships held last weekend at the Belk Stadium at North Carolina A+T University in Greensboro, NC.

The title in outdoor track follows Adam's victory in the weight throw at the New Balance National Indoor Track and Field Championships. In fact, this is the third time the local standout has earned the title "national champ" — Kelly also won the weight throw at the 2014 New Balance National Indoors.

Barrington can boast three All-Americans after last weekend's championships. Adam's teammate, soon-to-be-high school senior Bobby Colantonio finished second in the hammer throw, and fellow recent Barrington graduate Mike Alvernaz finished fifth in the same event.

Adam's top throw with the 5.44-kilo ball was 241 feet 7 inches, while Bobby recorded a throw of 236 feet 1 inch, and Mike had a best throw 198 feet 3 inches.

Barrington throwing coach Bob Gourley said Adam's winning throw placed him in the top five in New Balance National Scholastic Track and Field Championships history.

"Adam’s 241-07 winning throw is the fourth longest throw in meet history, and moves him to ninth on the national high school All-Time list," wrote Coach Gourley in a recent email.

Adam was not the only member of his family to impress track coaches last weekend. His sister, eighth-grader Annika Kelly, competed in the Emerging Elite category for the hammer throw at nationals and finished sixth overall. Annika was one of only two eighth-graders competing out of a field of 47 throwers.

Next up for Adam and Bobby is the USA Junior National Championships meet at historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon on Saturday. The competition will feature the international junior 6 kilogram hammer.

Another standout

Barrington's Grace Connolly also competed at the New Balance National Scholastic Track and Field Championships, running in the freshman two mile event. Connolly finished 11th overall with a time of 11:37.31.
