Local team misses top prize by just five points

A team of Barrington Middle School students competed in the annual Science Olympiad at Rhode Island College on Saturday, and just missed out on bringing home the top prize.

Barrington Middle School Razzmatazz cluster teacher Becky Ferry said the local boys and girls trailed the top team, Smithfield's Gallagher Middle School, by five points.

BHS and BMS teams went to nationals in 2016.

Barrington Middle School finished with 113 points, while Gallagher had 108. Wickford Middle School finished third with 144 points.

"The kids have been working and preparing since October and finally got to showcase their efforts," Ms. Ferry said. "I am incredibly proud of their hard work and enthusiasm for science. It was a really great day for the BMS science department."

Barrington had more first place event finishes than any other team in the state.

Clara Kugler and Xan Maddock-Mark won the "Anatomy and physiology" competition, while Jack Kelty and Mitchell Salomon won "Dynamic Planet" and Kelly Gorman and Will Medeiros won the "Invasive Species" event. Connor O'Neal and Mitchell Salomon won the "Rocks and Minerals" event.

Samuel Brock won the Quiz Bowl.

Barrington had two second place teams: Kelly Gorman and Jessica Liang in "Scrambler" and Courtney Brady and Katherine Chun in "Ornithology."

Barrington's third place finishers included Jack Kelty and Jessica Liang in "Meteorology," Peter Birch and Joshua Guertler in "Reach for the Stars," William Silveira and Joshua Guertler in "Wind Power" and Peter Birch and Joshua Guertler in "Wright Stuff."

Other students to contribute to Barrington's success were Alice Fisher, Zachary Payne, Aidan Roche, Chris Silveria and Athena Gong.
