First-graders learning basic math skills at Sowams School in Barrington were able to put that knowledge to work for a good cause this month. 

First grade teachers organized the school’s “Helping Hands Project,” to benefit Project Undercover, a local nonprofit that provides diapers, socks, and underwear for Rhode Island children in need.

From Feb. 1 through March 4, the school ran a drive to collect diapers, children’s socks and underwear, and baby wipes. They also used the drive as an opportunity to raise awareness about the need for these items in Rhode Island, educating the school community with information such as, “FACT: 30 percent of mothers struggle to purchase diapers for their children, which cost on average $1,000 per year.” 

Some first-graders made posters to hang around the school as reminders about the drive. In the end, they were able to collect more than 800 items, ranging from cases of diapers to multi-packs of socks.

After the drive ended, however, the real lessons began. 

“What was so terrific was that teachers not only used this opportunity to teach the children about how to help others, but also spent time with them counting each item. This became the first grade children's math project,” said Stephanie Oster Wilmarth, Project Undercover board member and mother of first-grader Ryan Wilmarth. The class later presented their findings and results at a school assembly.

“It was remarkable how hard these little ones worked,” said Ms. Wilmarth. “We are so grateful to the entire school, the staff and families for their generous donations.”
