Get ready for some changes to the school calendar in Barrington.

Earlier this month, members of the Barrington School Committee approved the calendar for the 2022-23 school year. It includes changes for professional development days and snow days.

For starters, professional development days for educators and other staff will no longer become virtual learning days for students.

In addition, the district will have two snow days (or inclement weather days), where students will not have to do virtual learning on those days when snow or other adverse weather conditions force the closure of schools.

If there are more than two snow days in the year, the district will shift to virtual learning where students will “engage in synchronous learning for three hours in the morning and staff will use the remaining three hours for professional development.”

According to a district-wide communication from Barrington Superintendent of Schools Michael Messore, Barrington schools will use five additional minutes of instructional time each day to off-set the two snow days.

“The 5 additional minutes for students were used to offset the beginning of the year transition days, which were optional for students in the 2021-2022 school year,” stated the release.

The recent communication also clarified some confusion surrounding the February vacation week.

“Prior to COVID and the roll-out of state calendars, we had one year without a February vacation,” stated the release. “At the end of that school year, we conducted a feedback poll. The poll revealed that the majority of families and staff wanted February vacation re-instituted. The primary reason was social-emotional well-being.”

Important dates

Following are two important dates in the recently-approved Barrington School Calendar for 2022-23:

• First day of school: Aug. 29, 2022

• Last day of school: June 23, 2023
