Barrington resident Mike Walter recently received a special award, recognizing outstanding Special Olympics athletes who have contributed to the success of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

The 2021 award was presented to Mr. Walter on Dec 6 by the LETR International Executive Committee. Mr. Walter has participated in the Torch Run Plunge since its inception 14 years ago and has raised more than $100,000 for Special Olympics.

On Dec. 5, Special Olympics Rhode Island held the 14th annual Torch Run Plunge at Salty Brine State Beach in Narragansett. This plunge typically hosts hundreds of participants, many representing local and state police agencies as well as fire departments, corrections officers and public safety.

He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
