Meet Patricia McLaughlin: Passionate advocate, special lecturer, yoga instructor, lifelong learner

Patricia McLaughlin has lived in Barrington for 20 years and is a lifelong experiential learner with endless curiosity.

“I love meeting new people, getting to know them, trying new activities and experiences, and always continuing to learn,” McLaughlin said during a recent interview.

Having earned her bachelor’s degree at Providence College and her law degree at The National Law Center at George Washington University, Patricia has worked as a lawyer and a special lecturer of law at Providence College for the past 28 years.

“I chose law because I was passionate about being an advocate for those in need,” she said. “As I look back on my career, I realize it is critically important to be there for those you represent during times that can be challenging, exciting, or both. That support is as important as the legal expertise you provide them.”

McLaughlin was the first female director of administration for the capital city, overseeing the budget, operations, and all departments. In addition, her achievements included major economic development projects, drafting and lobbying legislative initiatives at the state and federal levels,  and serving as a liaison to the arts and business sectors. She also drafted and successfully lobbied for the first arts district in Rhode Island, which has been duplicated in cities across the country.

She said her time at Providence College was vitally important.

“Both as a student and as a teacher at PC, I have learned that education changes lives,” she said. “As a student, I was fortunate to have incredible teachers. Now as a teacher, I know there is nothing more rewarding than to be part of a student’s educational journey. Plus, I learn so much from all of my students. Through our lively discussions, I always gain new insights and perspectives from them, and hopefully they deepen their understanding of legal concepts through real-world applications from me.”

McLaughlin is also currently the executive director of the Classical High School Alumni Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering alumni connections and supporting Classical High School students.

In addition, McLaughlin teaches group exercise and yoga at the Bayside Family YMCA. She also teaches “Yoga on the Beach” and “Full Moon Yoga” for the town’s recreation and senior services departments. She is a part of the RI Bar Association and has also recently joined the Barrington Women’s Club.

“Honestly, for too many years, I worked long hours and basically slept here. I am now dedicating myself to connecting to people and organizations in the town through a variety of meaningful ways,” she said. “I have also been fortunate to complete multiple teaching certifications in areas of personal interest, such as mindfulness and yoga. Of course, I’m just getting started, and that’s the exciting part.”
