Barrington Pop Warner has reason to cheer

Local program has history of success

Barrington Pop Warner's proud tradition in cheer will continue this fall when members of the Eagles cheer teams take the field.

Over the last eight years, Barrington Pop Warner has had competitive cheer teams consistently finish in the top three places at New England Pop Warner Regionals, and even more impressive, the Eagles have sent three teams to nationals since 2011.

Barrington has boasted a third place finisher at nationals and two second-place finishers — the second place finishers have been within “one point’ of taking first place for a national title.

“Competing at nationals is the most wonderful and most nerve-wracking experience you can ever have, it is the best!" said Kerryn Moran, a high school freshman who twice competed in nationals with Barrington Pop Warner. "I would like every BPW cheer athlete to experience nationals.”

Barrington Pop Warner cheer is currently holding online registrations. BPW cheer coordinator Susan Moran said the program is fun for kids of all skill levels.

"If you would like to see your child’s confidence soar, if your child has an interest in enhancing strength and flexibility, than maybe you should sign your child up for Barrington Pop Warner Cheer," said Ms. Moran. "There are no try-outs. BPW builds confidence and skill and you are placed on a team with your skill level and then BPW works with all to continue to enhances skill levels."

Michaela Andreozzi serves as an assistant cheer coach and learned first-hand about the positive impact of the sport.

“I started cheerleading for Barrington Pop Warner when I was 12 and immediately felt at home. It gave me confidence and a sense of belonging that I wouldn't have been able to experience through anything else," she said. "I've since become a coach with the hopes of giving younger generations the same experience. I am honored to be a part of something so positive and special. We don't just provide them with a fun experience; we build them, and I think that's very important.”

Kayla Testa Toman also serves as a coach for Barrington Pop Warner cheer.

“I had never found a sport that I loved until I joined Barrington Pop Warner," she said. "Cheerleading gave me confidence, a strong work ethic, and long lasting memories and friendships. I have been a coach for BPW for the past eight years and it is the most rewarding experience. The teams foster a community unlike any other, with all of the athletes creating such a special bond while working towards a common goal.”

Sarah O'Brien has a daughter who cheers for BPW.

"My daughter, Katie, is a Pop Warner Cheerleader in Barrington and so were at least two of her aunts (from both sides of her family). Actually, Katie's dad's sister and my sister were even on the same squad at one point back in the day," said Ms. O'Brien. "As parents, we always want our kids to be happy and to find something that they love. I'm happy to say that for my daughter that is Pop Warner Cheer."
