Barrington orders all public meetings to be held remotely

Executive order issued in response to ‘help reduce exposure to this wave of infections’

New Barrington Town Manager Phil Hervey issued a new executive order late last week that requires all public meetings to be held remotely, with no in-person option.

The order — 2022-1, Mr. Hervey’s first order as town manager — was filed on Friday and made effective immediately. The order also continues the requirement that face coverings be worn in all municipal buildings, regardless of a person’s vaccination status.

“In person meetings are certainly preferable, but the remote option will help reduce exposure to this wave of infections resulting from the highly infectious Omicron variant,” Mr. Hervey said.

The town manager’s executive order was issued following RI Governor Dan McKee’s new executive order that authorized public meetings to be held by telephone, audio-, or video-conferencing.

According to a press release from Mr. Hervey’s office, the town is now strongly recommending the use of N95, KN95, or three-ply surgical masks, instead of cloth coverings.

The new executive order will remain in effect until terminated or superseded by a subsequent order.
