The Barrington Town Council recently approved a $3,000 expenditure for hall of fame plaques and a banquet.
The money will pay for 14 plaques — 13 smaller plaques for each individual inducted in into the Barrington Heritage Hall of Fame, and one larger main plaque — as well as the engraving costs, and $500 for a reception.
Barrington Town Manager Jim Cunha said the town was not able to properly honor the hall of fame members last year because of the pandemic. The Barrington Heritage Hall of Fame was established in 2019 to recognize present and former residents who have made significant contributions to the town through civic service or philanthropic donations.
Money for the plaques and reception will come from the town council’s contingency fund. Council member Jacob Brier had asked Mr. Cunha why the money had not been previously budgeted and therefore needed to be taken from the council contingency fund. Mr. Cunha said he had not budgeted it. “I take full responsibility for that,” he said.
Council member Rob Humm said he thought the Barrington Heritage Hall of Fame was a great idea, and praised Mr. Cunha for coming up with it. He said he was fully in favor of it.
Council president Michael Carroll made the motion to approve the expenditure; Mr. Humm seconded it. The council voted unanimously in favor of it.
