The Barrington High School boys ice hockey team celebrated Alumni Appreciation Night with a 5-3 victory over Cumberland on Friday, Feb. 2.
Barrington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Adam Gorman netted Barrington’s first goal at the 11:47 mark of the first period. Trevor Snow and Jacob Simon assisted on the goal. Henry Kelsey gave Barrington the two-goal advantage at the 1:18 mark in the first. Brock Carroll assisted on the goal.
But the second period was all Cumberland. The Clippers scored three straight goals and took a 3-2 lead into the third and final period.
Barrington evened the score at 3-3 when Cody Wood found the back of the Clipper’s net. Austin McCarty notched the assist.
Barrington freshman Jacob Simon scored the game-winner and the insurance goal. The go-ahead score was at 1:17 and the final goal was 16 seconds later. Ayden Sheedy and Gorman assisted on the goals.
More than 40 alumni of Barrington Hockey joined in the celebration, which included a pre-game social event, as well as a ceremonial puck-drop and pre-game speech from hockey alumni.
Each year, alumni from the program make generous donations to support the Scharver, Hall, Cannon and Andrews memorial scholarships, and help the current team defray the costs associated with a robust hockey program. Alumni Appreciation Night is an opportunity for the players and families to show gratitude for the continued support of the former players throughout the year. This year's event was also an opportunity to celebrate 50 years of varsity hockey at Barrington. All alumni in attendance received a commemorative hockey puck to mark the special occasion.
