The Barrington High School music department celebrated a very successful day at the recent 48th annual Berklee High School Jazz Festival.
Barrington's Jazz ensemble finished in first place in the
Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival for Large Ensemble Class 3. This is the
second straight year that the local ensemble placed first.
The Berklee High School Jazz Festival competition is comprised of
three competitive categories: Large Ensembles, Combo Ensembles, and Vocal Jazz ensembles. Within each category, classes are determined by school size based upon the enrollments of grades 10, 11, and 12 (with the lowest number class having the largest school enrollment).
"As a top finisher, the band receives 4, 50 percent tuition scholarships for any Berklee Summer Program," stated a press release from Barrington High School.
In addition, the Barrington High School Combo Ensemble — it features Rohan Chander, Elena Serrano, Sam Rockwell, Jacob Whitman and Kieran Egan — enjoyed a strong day and finished in second place.
Kieran Egan was voted "Outstanding Musician for Large Ensemble Class 3" and Rohan Chander and Sam Rockwell received Judges' Choice Awards for the Combo and Jazz Ensembles.
"Congratulations to all these great musicians!" stated the release.
More than 200 high school Jazz ensembles performed in front of more than 5,000 attendees at the festival.
