The Barrington High School girls and boys swim teams finished their dual meet seasons undefeated regular season champions.
The boys team celebrated a key win over Hendricken early in the season and rolled to a 6-0 record, while the Barrington girls finished 6-0 with key wins over LaSalle Academy and Prout School.
Both teams also fared well in the Division I championships last weekend at Roger Williams University. The Barrington girls won the title, nipping LaSalle 342-339 in the final point tally, while the Barrington boys finished second to Hendricken 463-402.
Barrington Coach Sandy Gorham said he takes a different approach when entering his teams in the division championship — he does not allow his team members to swim their top events, and he doesn’t let them wear their “tech-suits.” Coach Gorham said his approach at the division championship meet is intended to help his team members prepare for the state championship, which will be held this weekend.
In fact, Coach Gorham said he was a bit surprised his team was able to capture the Division I title, despite the different approach. He said a few years ago, his team finished fourth at the division championship and then captured the state title by almost 100 points.
Coach Gorham said a number of girls swam well at the division meeting — Garin Stone finished second in the 200 freestyle, and Maude Smith-Montross finished second in the 100 freestyle and the 50 free. Freshman Lara Tolley and Ava Webster also did well, Coach Gorham said.
In the boys division championship, Barrington’s Lucas Jauregui, Max Laroche, Will McClelland and Alex McClelland combined to win the medley relay. Jauregui also won the 50 freestyle, and Laroche won the 100 breaststroke. Coach Gorham said Jared Lesk, a freshman, and his brother Gavin Lesk, a junior, both swam well at the division championship.
The Barrington coach said he expects both state meets (the boys and the girls) to be very exciting. He said his boys team has the potential to challenge perennial champs Hendricken.
“I think it’s going to come down to within 10 points. I think it’s going to be a real heavyweight fight,” Coach Gorham said. “It’s going to be fun.”
