Minor league baseball team reaches tournament finals, softball team competes at states

The Barrington AA All-Star baseball team made an exciting run to the championship game of the annual Christopher Andreozzi Memorial Tournament hosted by Darlington American Little League at Slater Park in Pawtucket.

After going 2-1 in pool play, the Barrington team qualified as the sixth seed heading into the single-elimination playoffs. After beating Middletown Little League 18-8 in the first round and King Phillip (Bristol) Little League 5-0 in the semifinals, Barrington earned a trip to the championship game to face North Providence.

After leading 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, they eventually fell short, losing 8-4.

The AA All-Stars Manager, Jody Corcoran, said "it was a tough loss for our team, but I'm incredibly proud of how this team played. This is a special group. We finished in second place out of 12 teams.  The boys will never forget this experience. It's just the beginning of a long run of baseball for this group. I'm excited about the future for Barrington Little League."

Softball team's run ends at states

The Barrington Minors Division All-Star softball team fell just short in its bid for a state championship.

But despite losing to Cranston West and South Kingstown in the state tournament, Barrington All-Star manager Chris Promades said he was very proud of his team’s performance and hard work throughout the All-Star season.

“It was an honor to be a part of such a special group of young girls on the Barrington Softball Minors All-Star team,” said Coach Promades. “Our goal as a coaching staff was to develop the fundamentals and skills of each girl on the team. During our first practice we talked about buying into the team concept, the importance of playing with a positive attitude and making sure each girl gave 100 percent effort at all times.

“These girls put in many hours of practice and sacrificed going on vacation, pool parties and cookouts and instead practiced ground balls and swings in the batting cage during some of summer's hottest days. We never focused on winning or losing but playing with 100 percent of their hearts and playing with positive attitudes. These girls earned the District 2 Championship, created memories that will last a lifetime and put Barrington Softball back on the map!”

The Barrington Minors Division All-Star team rolled through the District 2 tournament. The local girls defeated Portsmouth in their opener and then knocked off Newport in the next round. Barrington faced Newport in a rematch for the District 2 finals, and cruised to a 26-8 victory.

In the state tournament, Barrington fell to a tough Cranston West team in its opener and then dropped a 10-5 decision against South Kingstown.

Despite the loss, Coach Promades and the rest of the coaching staff feel very optimistic about the future of softball in Barrington.

“I am really impressed with the growing popularity of softball in Barrington,” Coach Promades said. “When the regular season started I was excited to find out that the Softball Minors Division was able to field four teams from within Barrington and this resurgence in girls softball carried over into the All-Star season.”
