A thrilling, come-from-behind overtime playoff victory for the Boston Bruins last week marked the beginning of a bad night for one Riverside man.

Late Monday night, May 13, the Bruins capped an improbable comeback win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring three goals in the third period and the game-winner in overtime. The 5-4 win moved the Bruins into the second round of the NHL playoffs ... it also spelled trouble for Jason Thomas Black.

The 28-year-old Riverside resident appeared to drown his sorrows in alcohol — he reportedly dislikes the Bruins — following the end of the game. By the time Barrington police tracked him down at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14, he was driving his vehicle south down Wampanoag Trail at 68 in a 45 mph zone.

An officer followed Mr. Black's vehicle for a short bit, allegedly noticing it swerve over the lane lines a few times. The officer ordered Mr. Black to pull his car to the side of the road near the exit for Primrose Hill Road.

Upon approaching the driver's side window, the officer could reportedly smell a strong odor of alcohol coming from Mr. Black. The man then allegedly told the officer that he was very drunk, didn't know where he was and was "mortified" that the Bruins had won.

The patrolman asked Mr. Black where he had been; he said he had been at a friend's house in Warren. The officer also noticed that Mr. Black was not wearing any shoes.

Mr. Black refused to take the breathalyzer test; officers charged him with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol-first offense and refusal to submit to a chemical test. He spent the night inside a holding cell at the Barrington Police Station and was transported to court the next morning.

The Bruins have since taken a 2-0 series lead against the New York Rangers in the second round of the NHL playoffs.
