Westport Selectman Craig Dutra emerged uninjured but sore after his car was struck Friday on Route 6 and rolled over.

Mr. Dutra was westbound on Route 6 in his 2013 Honda at 11:12 a.m. when a 2005 Buick pulled out of Maple Street, crossed the eastbound lane and slammed into the rear quarter of Mr. Dutra’s car, Westport police report.

The impact caused Mr. Dutra’s vehicle to spin into the median and roll over, said Westport detective Antonio Cestodio.

Det. Cestodio was a partial witness to it all.

The detective said he was driving away from Route 6 on Maple Street when he heard the loud crash behind him. He turned his head in time to see the SUV “finish rolling over … It was kind of a slow motion rollover.”

He went to the SUV and found Mr. Dutra belted in and upside down, surrounded by deployed airbags.

Mr. Dutra “needed help getting out” but once freed said he did need medical attention.

“I am doing well with a little stiffness in my lower back,” Mr. Dutra said later. He guesses that his car is totaled.

He said he saw the car approach his lane and, “While attempting to swerve to avoid it I was struck by the other vehicle causing my vehicle to flip over. I was wearing a seatbelt and the side airbags were deployed saving me from being seriously injured.”

Also unhurt was the driver of the Buick, identified as Jeffery Costa of Maple Street.

Mr. Costa was cited for failure to use caution after stopping for a stop sign.

Mr. Dutra added, “I am grateful for prompt and effective responses I received from the Westport Police and Fire Departments to this accident.”
