Town exploring the idea of hiring new part-time business liaison

There is a building at the corner of Bay Spring Avenue and Washington Road that has caught Jim Cunha's attention.

The new town manager said some of the storefronts inside the building are empty and have been so for some time, but he would like to see that changed. Mr. Cunha said one of his goals is focused on improving the town's tax base and enhancing the local business climate.

Downtown Barrington gets a makeover.

"We don't want to see empty storefronts," Mr. Cunha said.

Mr. Cunha said there are limited opportunities to expand the town's residential base — most of the residential property is built out.

But, he added, there is potential for growth in the town's commercial base. He quickly listed off some areas around town, such as Bay Spring and some locations on County Road.

However, Mr. Cunha cautioned that there is a balance to maintain: "We need to maintain the town's character."

The new manager said he is also exploring the idea of hiring a part-time employee to help improve the local business landscape. The individual would reportedly fill a number of roles, including helping people navigate the challenges associated with opening a business in town.

Mr. Cunha said the streetscape improvements in downtown Barrington may serve to benefit the business community also.
