The Mt. Hope gymnastics team went undefeated and won the RIIL Division II State Championship for the second year in a row on Sunday afternoon at Rhode Island College. The Lady Huskies edged out Middletown and Portsmouth to earn this year's title. The sophomore trio of Meghan Oliver, Jayme Foreman and Kaitlin Quinn led the Huskies to victory with their all around skill and determination. Oliver placed fifth in the state, with an all around score of 35.175, scoring a 9.0 on vault, 8.65 on bars, 8.4 on beam and 9.125 on floor. Foreman placed seventh in the state with an overall score of 34.70. She scored an 8.5 on vault, 8.3 on bars, 9.0 on beam and 8.9 on floor. Quinn placed 16th in the state, with an overall score of 33.275. She scored a 8.3 on vault, 7.25 on bars, 8.675 on beam and a 9.050 on floor.
Juniors Ashley Heald and Brianna Gendreau along with freshman Molly Thibaudeau and Victoria Buonavolonta, Emilie Donato, Katie Donato, Kaira Lawrence and Grace Silva also contributed to the Huskies victory.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
