Marilyn Anne Penney, 75, long-time resident of Little Compton and recently, Portsmouth, passed away very peacefully on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Philip Hulitar Hospice. She was predeceased by her companion, the late Agnes (Nessie) Bayley.

Marilyn was born in New York City and was the daughter of the late William F. and Freida M. (Bauer) Penney. Her brother, William J. Penney pre-deceased her.

Marilyn spent much of her life in New York City prior to relocating to Rhode Island 25 years ago. Most recently, Marilyn was employed as an administrator for ReFocus, Inc. in Providence for ten years, supporting adults with developmental disabilities. Previously, Marilyn taught and trained teams of social workers specializing in finding foster homes for older children and children with developmental disabilities in England, Scotland, New York City and Massachusetts.

Marilyn was a talented artist and enjoyed painting. She was an avid reader, a voracious and talented writer, a political junkie and peace activist. She was an active member of the Sakonnet Peace Alliance and enjoyed spending time with her many friends and her beloved cat, Jack.

She is survived by her nieces, Linda Ryan and her husband William and Kathleen Penney, all of New Jersey, and her many dear friends.

Marilyn's funeral will be held on Friday, March 3, at 10 a.m. in the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.

Burial will be private.

Calling Hours will precede the service from 9-10 a.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to ReFocus, Inc. 45 Greeley St., Providence, RI 02904.
