LITTLE COMPTON — The Town will have its first town administrator beginning July 1.

As a result of unanimous Town Council action last Thursday night, Thomas G. Dunn III, who now serves as the town's business manager, will acquire a new title and new responsibilities, and will shift from part-time to full-time employment.

He will also receive a significant bump in salary: from $43,195 to $69,000 annually.

Mr. Dunn, who has served as business manager for the last eight years (his contract as such expires June 30).

"This will permit the Town Council to focus on matters of longer term strategic significance," said Council President Robert Mushen. The types of things we'll be facing in years ahead will be somewhat different than what we've been used to."

Asked to give some examples, Mr. Mushen listed a few. "The use of properties in a residential zone for entertainment, " he said, "and the ordinances of the town need updating. We have no solar ordinance, for example."

"The challenge," he said, "will be our ability to remain a small rural town in the midst of the complexity of being a single municipality in the state. You have to be alert to what's coming down the pike."

The duties and chain of command are addressed in the Town Home Rule Charter (Section 601.A) as well as the Town Ordinances (Sec. 2-2.4).

In essence, the town administrator works for the Town Council, reports "on a day to day basis" to the council president (especially in respect to priorities), serves as the chief administrative officer of the town, and shall "supervise and coordinate" the "administrative activities" of the fire chief, the police chief, the director of public works, the building official, and the town treasurer and tax collector (an elected official, in matters relating to the administration of town revenues and expenditures).

Mr. Dunn is a resident of Tiverton .
