Letter: Wildlife warning — please be careful with your pets

Posted

To the editor:

On Thursday, July 21, at 4 p.m., our beautiful, sweet, perfect 9 week old golden retriever puppy got killed by a fox in our backyard, 10 feet from our house.

As a pediatric emergency physician I spend my time keeping children safe but I failed to protect this innocent life. I write this letter devastated by sadness and guilt, but want to caution others to learn from my tragic mistake so her short life was not in vain.

We share our beautiful community with all kinds of wildlife. Ospreys soar overhead, turtles hatch in our backyard, but in the edges of the woods there are also coyotes, foxes and other predators looking for food.

Please, to everyone who reads this letter, be careful with your pets. Don’t let them outside unattended, keep them on leash. Even for a moment, even in your backyard, even in the middle of the afternoon.

We were blessed to have our puppy for just over a week. She brought joy to our lives. Please let her death prevent others.

Thank you.
