PAWTUCKET — There will be a one-game playoff for the Rhode Island Little League Junior Division Baseball All Star state championship after District 1 champion Elmwood emerged from the losers' bracket to defeat previously unbeaten and District 2 champion Rumford, 7-2, Wednesday night, July 27, at Pine View's Tomlinson Complex.
Following a 1-2-3 at bat from Rumford to begin the game, Elmwood raced to a 4-0 lead after scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning on three hits, two errors and a walk. Elmwood added another run in the home half of the second to build its edge to 5-2.
The locals finally got on the board in the top of the fourth when Brandon Landry reached on an error with two out. Sam Turner also reached and Adam Gomes then singled. Elmwood, though, answered with two more tallies in the bottom of the frame to take a 7-1 advantage.
Rumford notched what proved the final run of the night in the top of the sixth. Jayden Barber led off with a double en route to eventually coming around to score.
James Dorante was the winning pitcher for Elmwood, throwing 6-2/3 innings while also helping his cause by reaching base twice and scoring two runs.
The two teams return to the Tomlinson Complex for the deciding game Thursday night, July 28, at 5:30 p.m. The winner advances to the Junior League Baseball East Regional Tournament, August 5-10, in Freehold Township, N.J.
