This is what happens when a town spends $30 million/year on police/fire and only $72 million on schools. Schools get ignored.

Barrington spends $6 million on police/fire and $45 million on schools. Cranston spends $14 million on police/fire and $137 million on schools. Do you see the difference in ratio?

EP is the only town in America that spends nearly half of what it spends on schools on police/fire.

The teachers and students may be great, but we live in a superficial world. Nobody with children wants to move to a town with dilapidated schools. Real estate values drop. Incoming taxes drop. More local kids go to La Salle. Ex-Townies move to Seekonk.

Wake up EP Town Hall, or you'll be the next Warwick!

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
