PORTSMOUTH — Two people were hurt in an accident shortly before noon Thursday on East Main Road, just north of Bramans Lane.

According to Portsmouth Police Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold, a 2000 Ford pickup truck collided with a building supply truck that was traveling south on East Main Road.

The driver of the pickup truck, Richard Ambrogio, Jr., 83, and a passenger, Barbara Ambrogio, 75, both from Middletown, were trapped inside the vehicle as a result of the collision, he said.

The Portsmouth Fire Department, along with Naval Fire and Middletown Fire, assisted in extricating the two from the vehicle. They were taken to a hospital due to their injuries. They remained in intensive care at Rhode Island Hospital as of Monday.

The operator of the Dartmouth Building Supply truck, 38-year-old Jeffrey Oliveria of Fall River, along with a passenger, were uninjured, police said.

The roadway was shut down for over two hours while investigators from the Portsmouth Police Detective Division, Portsmouth Accident Recon Team, Middletown Police and the Rhode Island State Police Truck Squad assisted with the investigation, Det. Arnold said.

The investigation is ongoing, he said.
