PORTSMOUTH — The nonprofit environmental group Clean Ocean Access (COA) hosted a cleanup at Melville Park on Saturday — just in time for fishing and camping season.
Opening day of freshwater fishing season is set for Saturday, April 14, and Upper Melville Pond is typically a favorite spot for local anglers. (For more information on opening day or to purchase a fishing license, visit www.dem.ri.gov.)
According to COA, 35 volunteers helped remove a total of 714 pounds of marine debris from Melville Park Saturday, including a large water-logged mattress, multiple tires and an assortment of fishing gear.
Jeff Richard from The Melville Park Committee helped with the cleanup and also educated volunteers about the park and the history behind its different ponds and trails.
COA is seeking volunteers to donate two to three hours of their time one Saturday morning every month to help maintain the trails at Melville Park and to keep it clean. For more information, send an e-mail to info@cleanoceanaccess.org.
