PORTSMOUTH — Vehicle stickers to use the Hedly Street and Prudence Island transfer stations will go on sale Tuesday, Jan. 3.

The Town Council set the sticker fee at $250 for the first vehicle per household — a $40-increase over the 2022 fee. Residents will be charged $10 for one additional vehicle per household.

Stickers will be available for sale at the Tax Collector’s Office at Portsmouth Town Hall starting Jan. 3 during normal business hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday; and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday.

The current 2022 sticker will provide entry into the Hedly Street transfer station until Jan. 31, 2023. The 2022 Prudence Island transfer station stickers provide entry to that facility until April 1, 2023.

The town continues the pay-as-you-throw (PAYT) program used in conjunction with its transfer station. All residential household waste must be disposed of in specially marked town-approved bags residents purchase at area stores.

Recycling is disposed of free of charge. Yard waste drop-off, also free of charge, is available March 15 to Dec. 31. The Hedly Street transfer station offers a wide variety of diversion bins to dispose of various household items, most of which are free.

The application with 2023 rules for each transfer station, FAQs, links, and more, can be found on the town’s website at www.portsmouthri.gov/182/Transfer-Station-Solid-Waste.

Residents may purchase stickers by mail using the application form for the applicable transfer station, which are available on the town’s website and at Town Hall. Instructions and documents needed for mail applications are listed on the application itself. The town is not responsible for lost mail applications.

If you have any questions about the sticker sales, call the Tax Collector’s Office at 401/683-1214.

If you have questions about PAYT or recycling, e-mail publicworks@portsmouthri.gov or call 401/683-0362.
