Portsmouth Patriots football season kicks off Friday

Team will face North Kingstown on the road

PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School varsity football team begins its new season with a non-league road game against North Kingstown at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8.

The Patriots lost an Injury Fund game to Rogers, 10-7, last Thursday, Aug. 31, in Barrington.

They’ll face Westerly in a league game, also on the road, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.

The home opener is a non-league contest against Bishop Hendricken at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 22.

They’re not the only PHS team that is starting play this week. Here are some other contests this week and next:

• Thursday, Sept. 7: Girls’ varsity volleyball team hosts South Kingstown in the PHS field house at 6 p.m.

• Friday, Sept. 8: Girls’ varsity tennis team visits North Kingstown at 3:30 p.m.; and girls’ varsity soccer team visits Lincoln at 6 p.m.

• Saturday, Sept. 9: Boys’ varsity soccer team visits Tolman at 6 p.m.

• Monday, Sept. 11: Boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams face multiple schools at 4 p.m. at the Glen Park/polo grounds; and the girls’ tennis team hosts Moses Brown at 4 p.m.

• Tuesday, Sept. 12: Girls’ varsity volleyball team visits La Salle Academy at 6:30 p.m.; and the girls’ varsity soccer team hosts North Smithfield at 7 p.m.

• Wednesday, Sept. 13: Girls’ tennis team visits Mt. Hope High School at 3:45 p.m.; and the boys’ varsity soccer team visits Bishop Hendricken at 6:30 p.m.

• Thursday, Sept. 14: Girls’ varsity soccer team plays a scrimmage against St. George’s on the road at 4:45 p.m.; and the girls’ varsity volleyball team hosts North Kingstown at 6 p.m.
