Portsmouth advances to finals after knocking off No. 1 seed
Patriots upset Ponaganset in D-2 hockey semifinals
PORTSMOUTH — The Portsmouth High School boys’ varsity hockey will be playing for all the marbles on Sunday.
The No. 5-seeded Patriots stunned the No. 1 seed in Division II, Ponaganset, in the semifinals on Sunday by a score of 4-1.
The game was tied 1-1 going into the third period, but the Patriots’ Shane Temple, a junior, scored with less than 5 minutes left to make it 2-1. Portsmouth added a couple of late scores before the final whistle blew.
The Patriots’ goalkeeper, Jonathan Cabral, made 23 stops total in holding the Chieftains to just one goal.
Steven Madden scored an unassisted goal for Portsmouth in the first period, tying the game at a goal apiece.
In the third period, Portsmouth’s Connor Rogers and Temple both scored empty-netters with under a minute to play.
Sunday’s win sets up a date with St. Raphael Academy, the No. 3 seed, in the D-2 championship game on Sunday, March 17. The match begins at 1 p.m. at Providence College’s Schneider Arena.
Portsmouth lost both times it faced the Saints this season, by scores of 7-4 and 6-5.
But then again, the Patriots also dropped both of its regular season matchups to Ponaganset by scores of 4-1 and 5-4.
