PHS boys take 2nd, girls 4th in Division track meet

PORTSMOUTH — Portsmouth High track and field athletes won several events at the RIIL Eastern Division Championships held Saturday at Barrington High School.

As a team, the PHS boys came in second place and the girls, in fourth place. Barrington High swept the meet, in which 14 teams competed.

Boys’ results

Landon Rodrigues had a busy day. He won the triple jump with a best effort of 41 feet even, and came in fifth in the long jump (19 feet, 7.5 inches). Rodrigues also took third in both the 110-meter hurdles (15.17 seconds) and the 300-meter hurdles (40.26 seconds).

Tristan Thomas won the pole vault with a best effort of 11 feet even.

Ayden Gleeson came in second place in the hammer throw with an impressive toss of 169 feet, 5 inches. He took fifth in the discus throw with a best effort of 114 feet, 9 inches.

Aidan Chen took third place in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.33 seconds. He came in fourth in the high jump with a best effort of 6 feet, 2 inches.

Some other notable performances from the boys:

• Sean Gray came in third place in the 1,500-meter run, clocking a time of 4:10.6. He placed fifth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.65.

• The boys performed well in the running relays. The 4x100-meter relay team of Nate DeConto, Christopher Wilkie, Aidan Chen, and Joe Sanderson came in second with a time of 44.82 seconds. The 4x800-meter team of Caiden McHale, Patrick Orbon, Drew Forch, and Jack Marston took third place in a time of 9:11.42. The 4x400-meter team of Jae Defalco, Tim Spooner, Christopher Wilkie, and Sean Gray came in fourth in a time of 3:37.8.

• Chris Vachon came in fifth in the 3,000-meter run (9:47.32) and sixth in the 1,500-meter run (4:28.17).

Girls’ results

Among the girls, PHS junior Allie Kaull had a superb day. She won the 3,000-meter run in impressive fashion, clocking a time of 10:21.43 — more than 37 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. 

Kaull also ran the last leg of the girls’ 4x800-meter relay, which Portsmouth won in a time of 10:13.2. The other members of the squad were sophomores Eleni Drosinos, Hanalei Streuli, and Reilly Porado.

Emily DeConto won the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.09 seconds, and came in third in the 100-meter hurdles in 16.63 seconds. She also took fifth in the 200-meter dash (27.42 seconds) and sixth in the 100-meter dash (13.33 seconds).

Other notable performers from the girls’ team:

• Rowan Snyder came in second place in the pole vault with a best effort of 8 feet even.

• Eleni Drosinos came in fourth place in the 1,500-meter run, clocking a time of 5:09.76.

• Claire Hook took fifth in the long jump with a best leap of 15 feet, 7.25 inches. 

• Laramae Platt tossed the shot put 23 feet, 4 inches, good enough for fifth place.
