The coach of a basketball team competing in Tiverton over the weekend has been charged with assaulting a 15-year-old player.

Adam Hayes, 42, of Peabody, Ma., faces charges of simple assault and disorderly conduct following the incident, which occurred at the Longplex complex on Saturday evening.

Police were called to the sports complex at about 7:30 p.m. When they arrived, a large number of patrons were hurriedly streaming out of the building. Initially, officers were told that a gun was involved, though they found no evidence of a firearm or any other weapon during their investigation. Employees told them that Hayes and the boy got into an altercation at the conclusion of the game, and that Hayes assaulted the boy.

The boy declined transport to the hospital. Hayes was taken into custody, arraigned that evening and released on $1,000 surety bail. He is scheduled to appear in Second Division District Court on Thursday.
