EAST PROVIDENCE — The East Providence Heritage Arts organization, the remnants of the former Heritage Days festival held in city, conducted its first "Battle Of The Bands" contest Saturday night, Oct. 21, in the East Providence High School auditorium.
"Street Survivors RI," a band with city ties formed in tribute to the legendary Southern Rock pioneers Lynyrd Skynyrd, were selected as the winners by a panel of three judges including former city music teacher and RI Music Hall of Famer John Baldaia, Karah Bailey of ABC6 News and talent agent Michael Yorkell. The first place prize included $500 plus studio recording time at Soundscape Studios in nearby Attleboro.
Members of "Street Survivors RI" included: Piano, Dutchman Hoke; Drums, Brian Gray; Guitar, Brian Sisman, Jon Gentile and Dan MacMaster; Bass, James Harris; Backup singers, Diane Pezzullo, Frances Downey; and Lead Singer, Alan Jones.
The second place prize of $300 was taken by "Renegade Cartel," a hard rock band and composers/performers of original music headquartered in Peabody, Mass. Finalists selected to perform Saturday also included Beyond Gravity" and "Viral."
