Townies trounce Avengers, snap two-game D-II losing skid

EAST PROVIDENCE — Coming off a pair of last-second losses the previous two weeks, the East Providence High School football team capped a three-game homestand with a 26-0 shutout of East Greenwich in a Division II-A contest Friday night, Oct. 13, at Townie Stadium.

Isaac Fox scored a pair of touchdowns for the hosts on Military Appreciation Night, one a 52 yard punt return and the other on what has become his specialty, a "counter" run for 41 yards.

Fox's backfieldmates accounted for the two other East Providence scores: fullback Steven Clark Jr. bulled his way through the visiting Avengers for a 43-yard TD run while quarterback Jacob Duarte rushed for an eight-yard touchdown.  Justine Jardine also kicked a pair of extra points.

The Townies had dropped their last two games, both also at Townie Stadium, in the final minute to Cranston West and Mt. Pleasant.

Against EG, East Providence was frustrated early, but finally got on the board before the break. The Avengers stymied a long Townie drive that started in the first quarter and carried into the second, holding the hosts out of the endzone on a first-and-goal situation.

The East Providence defense, in turn, forced a punt to end EG's next possession, Fox catching the kick two steps into Townie territory then following his blockers to the right untouched for six. Jardine's kick made it 7-0 locals midway through the period. The score remained that way to intermission.

The Townies broke the game open in the third, scoring their other three TDs. Fox set up EP into Avengers' territory with a significant run. On the next play, Clark went off left tackle all the way to the endzone to make it 13-0. Jardine's PAT was blocked.

Following the kickoff, East Greenwich fumbled on its first play of the series, which was recovered by the Townies' Colin Roche. Two plays later Fox ran the counter to the endzone. Jardine's initial PAT was blocked, but the Avs were ruled offsides. He then made his second attempt to up EP's lead to 20-0.

An EG turnover also led to the Townies' last TD. Defensive  tackle Jasper Chakouian picked off a pass deflected at the line of scrimmage to set up the locals inside Avenger's  territory. An handful of plays later Duarte scored after East Providence reached deep inside the red zone.

The Townies improved to 2-3 in the league ranks with one game remaining on its regular season schedule Saturday, Oct. 21, in Burrillville at noon. East Greenwich remained winless in II-A games at 0-4.
