A Barrington resident called police on Friday, June 5, after he fell victim to a phone scam.
The man told police he received a call from someone alleging to be a utility provider, and claiming that the resident owed more than $1,000. The caller ordered the resident to go to the store and purchase money cards and then share the card information with them, or his electricity would be turned off. The resident obliged and paid $1,011.90.
The resident then received another call from the same individuals claiming that the payment did not go through and his bill was actually for $1,500.
That's when the resident grew suspicious and contacted police, who told the man the call was a scam.
