Building Bridges for Veterans: free monthly lunches in Bristol

Posted

Building Bridges, a New England–based veterans support initiative, continues its mission to reduce isolation and strengthen mental health among veterans through free community meals. Founded in 2015 in Northampton, Mass., the volunteer-run program has grown into a regional network of 15 to 17 meal sites across four states, serving more than 115,000 meals to date.

The program focuses on combating social isolation, depression, PTSD, and suicide risk by creating opportunities for veterans to gather, share stories, and build supportive relationships.

Since May 2025, St. Michael’s Episcopal Church has been RI’s first, and proud, participant in the Building Bridges network, offering free monthly lunches to veterans from the local VA Home and the wider community.

The lunches are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All veterans are welcome to attend. The gatherings provide not only a hot meal but also fellowship, conversation, and a sense of community among those who have served.

Organizers encourage residents to spread the word and invite veterans they know. A simple meal can be an important step toward connection and support. Freedom is not free. Take a moment to thank a veteran for the rights and liberties we enjoy.
