Just over half of Bristol Warren Regional School District students in Grades 3 to 8 are meeting or exceeding state standards for English language arts and math, according to standardized test results released last week.

The results of the RICAS tests, taken by students last May, show that as a whole, Bristol Warren students fared significantly better overall than their peers across the state. Statewide, 27.4 percent of students met or exceeded English language arts standards, while 33.7 percent met or exceeded math standards. In Bristol Warren, all schools performed higher than the state average.

However, the test results show areas of concern for the district. In two schools — Hugh Cole Elementary and Kickemuit Middle School — fewer than half of the students met or exceeded the state standards. At Colt Andrews School, students were stronger in ELA than in Math. At the Guiteras and Rockwell schools, students performed at higher levels in all areas.

The lowest scores in the district are at Kickemuit Middle School, where only 31 percent met state standards for math, and 45 percent met state standards for English language arts.

On the other side of the coin, students at the Rockwell School in Bristol fared the best, with 68 percent meeting state standards in math, and 78 percent meeting English language arts standards.
