Portsmouth man charged with assaulting elderly woman

PORTSMOUTH — A 44-year-old man was arrested Sunday for allegedly assaulting a 76-year-old Portsmouth woman.

Officers received information that Matthew C. George, 44, of 288 Sprague St., had physically assaulted the woman on Feb. 22, according to police.

A warrant was issued, and officers responded to George’s home at about 9 p.m. on Sunday and took him into custody without incident, police said.

Here are some other recent arrests made by Portsmouth Police:

Wednesday, Feb. 21

Kevin Thomas Botelho, 36, of 34 Robin Drive, Bristol, was charged with driving under the influence (DUI), first offense, after being stopped for speeding on West Main Road at Passage Drive around 2 a.m. According to police, Botelho was driving about 80 mph in an area posted for 35 mph. Botelho was also cited for refusing to submit to a chemical test.

Ryan Vazquez, 38, of 10 Market St., Warren, was charged with violating a no-contact order, his third and subsequent offense, following a motor vehicle stop in the area of Chase Road and Sunset Avenue shortly before 5:30 p.m. While running routine checks, officers determined Vazquez had violated an active no-contact order he had with a 43-year-old Warren man, police said.

Erica L. Peckham, 42, of 104 Maple Ave., Middletown, was charged with DUI, first offense, after officers found her disabled vehicle pulled off Stringham Road at Cimmaron Drive around 5:50 p.m. Peckham was also cited for refusing a chemical test, police said.

Saturday, Feb. 24

Patience A. Vars, 29, of 9A Ludlow Road, Middletown, was charged with possession of a controlled substance after officers found her vehicle parked at the main entrance to the Weaver Cove Boat Ramp off Burma Road shortly before 8:30 p.m. Officers observed copper wire on the floor of the vehicle alongside a backpack, police said. “The suspect verbally consented to a search of her backpack which yielded glass pipes commonly associated with the illicit consumption of crack cocaine,” said police. A further search yielded two, 15mg capsules of Focalin, according to police. Police said Vars also had a suspended driver’s license.

Sunday, Feb. 25

Joseph G. Marshall, 26, of 389 Manchester St., Apt. 2, Fall River, was charged with domestic cyberstalking and cyber-harassment. He turned himself in at the police station around 2:10 p.m. on an affidavit warrant stemming from a previous domestic incident, police said. The victim was a 26-year-old woman who lives in Portsmouth, police said.
