The Mt. Hope High School girl’s lacrosse team crushed Narragansett at home Thursday, 16-2, getting their Division II playoff run off to a hot start and earning them a semifinal home matchup against South Kingstown next Wednesday at Colt Park.
Playing at home, the girls dominated the 7-6 Mariners, giving coach Kerri Ferreira a chance to give many of her younger players field time as the game wound down.
“I was trying to let the clock wind down,” the coach said. “I took my five seniors out and a lot of players got a chance to get in.”
The Huskies’ offensive attack was led by Jenna Cimbron, who had seven goals and two assists. Next in line was Grace MoClair, with four goals and four assists.
On defense, Coach Ferreira said there were so many standouts, it was hard to pick a favorite:
“Anna Kopecky, our senior captain, really stood out” as did her sister Ellee, who is also a goaltender on the regional girls’ hockey team in wintertime.
“She played defense for me as a freshman,” Coach Ferreira said. “This year we needed a keeper and she stepped up.”
Also putting in a strong performance was draw person Caroline Parker, a senior captain.
“She’s a midfielder playing both sides of the ball,” the coach said. “She does it all.”
On the boys' side, the Division II North second seed Huskies open their playoff run with a home game against Prout Friday afternoon at Guiteras Field. The team was 9-4 on the regular season.
