Officials believe lightning strike to blame for recent outage

Posted

Technical issues surfaced at Victory Field during the first games of the fall season.

At Thursday night’s Injury Fund football games, the lights atop one of the poles would not turn on, and the Eagles’ scoreboard was not working.

Barrington High School Director of Athletics and Student Activities George Finn said he did his best to trouble-shoot the unexpected outages, and was happy that they were able to play all of the football games. (Barrington hosted teams from five other schools during the Injury Fund games.)

“It’s no big deal. We got the games in,” Finn said during an interview on Friday.

A few days later, Finn had good news to report: The scoreboard is repaired.

Finn said a crew stopped by the high school on Tuesday, Sept. 5 and fixed the scoreboard. He said officials believe a previous lightning strike was to blame for the outage.

Pole problem

Finn said an electrician had stopped by Victory Field the morning after the Injury Fund games. He said the problem with one of the light poles is not system-wide, rather it is specific to that pole, which is located at the southeastern end of the field (closest to the BHS baseball field).

“It’s something at the pole itself,” he said.

The lights from the three other poles illuminated Victory Field enough to allow Thursday’s games to proceed.

Finn said he had actually had a meeting with a representative from a lighting company last week, prior to the Injury Fund games. Finn said the company is providing Barrington High School with an estimate to retrofit the light poles with new LED lights. Officials have said that LED lights would provide better, more focused lighting on Victory Field.

Finn said the existing lights were installed in 1995.

Barrington High School hosted a series of Injury Fund soccer games on Friday. Most of those games were played during daylight hours, as were the Barrington Pop Warner football games on Sunday.
